How I Documented Our South African Safari in one day
I created a System
Imagine taking over 5,000 photos on safari and doing absolutely nothing with them!
That's the reality for most travelers. You come home from the trip of a lifetime, overwhelmed and jet-lagged, with thousands of stunning images sitting on your phone... and somehow, years go by and they're still just sitting there. Never printed. Never shared. Never turned into anything that lasts.
I refused to let that happen with our South African safari. This was a once in a lifetime kinda trip!
Here's exactly how I documented it all in real time using the Persnickety Box app, Canva, and a simple system that had a finished photo album in my hands just 48 hours after we landed.
Step 1: I Prepared Before We Left
The biggest mistake most people make with travel photos? Waiting until they get home to "figure it out." By then, life has taken over and the photos never get touched.
My solution: I created a set of custom 4×4" journaling cards in Canva before we ever boarded the plane. I printed these cards before we left so I had a physical set of journaling cards waiting for me to fill out in the field.
Step 2: We Documented As We Lived It
This is the secret ingredient most people skip and it makes all the difference. I packed that box of journaling cards in my carry-on and brought it with us to South Africa. In between game drives, we'd pull out the cards and write. We captured how we were feeling in that moment. The sounds of the bush at night, the sunset, the taste of the food (farm to table and absolutely incredible). The "Rhino attack" that had us all holding our breath.
If I'd waited until I got home to journal about the trip, I would have captured the events, but not the emotions. The rawness of those feelings fades fast! My husband filled out cards too. Our friends who traveled with us filled out cards. Everyone was in on it.
Step 3: I Curated Photos on the Flight Home
I tried to organize my photos by location in folders, then I created a “to print” folder of my favorites. It’s hard to narrow down! On the flight home I swiped them into 3 Persnickety Boxes (and added 10 more prints in each box). By the time we landed, I had 120 prints ordered directly through the app. And here's the part that still amazes me: the prints arrived 48 hours after we landed.
Step 4: The Album Came Together in an Afternoon
I used an 8×8" album from Doodlebug Design (Amazon) with 4×4" pocket pages. Four pockets per spread, the perfect format for pairing photos with journaling cards. I didn't need to be a scrapbooker to pull it off. The journaling cards did the heavy lifting and they gave every page a story.
We Had Something to Show Our Kids
When our kids came over after the trip and asked, "How was it?" we didn't just say "amazing" and scroll through our phones. We sat down together and showed them. A finished album, full of real printed photos and handwritten memories, right there at the table. They could hold it, flip through it, read what we wrote. They could see what it felt like to sit 10 feet from a pride of lions at golden hour.
That's the whole point, isn't it? Not just capturing memories, but sharing them.
What You'll Need
The Persnickety Box app — your photos, printed and delivered in days
An 8×8" pocket album — I used Doodlebug Design from Amazon
Extra pocket pages - 8” pocket pages + 4x4” pocket pages
Canva (free) — to design your own custom journaling cards
A pen — fine point sharpie works best on emulsion based silver halide prints
One More Thing — You Can Gift It!
One of my favorite parts of this whole project: I shipped a copy of the prints to the friends who traveled with us ($17.99 + free shipping). Same photos, same memories, arriving on their doorstep. The Persnickety Box app makes gifting a box incredibly easy and it might be one of the most meaningful gifts I've ever given.
